PATIOS AND SPANISH CORTIJOS

a showcase of landscaping elegance

Landscaping is all about creating beauty using the textures, tones and above all allure of nature itself. A skilled landscaper will use the home or other structures as a starting point, a fountain of inspiration for his or her designs, blending the natural design with the manmade elements so as to enhance and accentuate the architecture as well as allowing it to blend into the overall surroundings.

The venue and location are therefore the starting point for the design, and in the case of wonderfully rustic Marbella projects we as landscapers find ourselves with a haven of possibilities and overflowing chances to be creative. Our role is to create personal oases of heavenly peace and beauty accompanied by the classic architecture of  structures, their cultural link to the land and the fantastic views and scenery of individual sites. Here are some of the main distinguishing elements.

Entrances

If our job is to enhance the sense of ambience within a home – through its views of the exterior – and around it, then the entrance is often the starting point. This first point of contact tends to be very stark and modern these days, but in the classic cortijo property we recently worked upon it is all about transmitting the rich heritage and timeless sense of peace and wellbeing within its grounds. Thus defined, an entrance becomes a stepping stone into a cooling patio or a terrace, and the flowering plants and creepers as well as large potted plants placed here create a floral spectacle that speak of the richness of its garden, with its visual and fragrant impact.

Patios

The patio is a time-honoured principle of homebuilding in warm climates, and was a central feature of homes in Roman and Moorish times. Since Andalucía was strongly influenced by both these cultures, the patio is an inseparable feature of a southern Spanish villa or country home. Besides being attractive and offering a very private place to retreat and relax, as well as entertain, it is also a highly practical feature that allows fresh air to enter and cool the home, functions as an ideal distribution point between rooms and sections of the home, and brings a touch of natural beauty right into your home. Potted plants, softly trickling fountains, creepers and ambient lights help to set the tone.

Relaxing spaces

A garden is at its best when it provides spots that take your breath away with their beauty, their views and the way they entice you to sit down, enjoy the cool breeze and simply relax. It has long been the art of the landscaper to create such spaces, be they in the form of a pretty courtyard, a scenic terrace, a manicured lawn or poolside deck, or indeed an intimate little spot tucked into a corner of the grounds. Fountains and swimming pool decks form an idyllic spot by the cooling water for idyllic regenerating, just as benches or outdoor dining areas in flower-filled beauty spots under large trees simply invite you with their magical allure.

Recognising the potential of each spot and indeed plot of land is the landscaper’s particular skill and art, and one we relish. Contact us for large or more intimately sized projects if you want more than just a lawn and tiles.
