LA MENARA

born from a love of nature

It was during a visit to Marrakesh in the 1990s that we first discovered the beautiful landscaped gardens of La Menara, whose famous garden pavilion stands reflected in a large basin that also mirrors the snow-capped Atlas Mountains towering in the distance. The way in which this once arid space had been transformed into an idyllic spot where water came from Atlas mountain sources some 30 miles away merges with endless skies, floral beauty and evocative Moorish architecture inspired us.

La Menara is a perfect example of form and function, as its purpose is to provide irrigation for the surrounding farming communities. We were inspired by this harmony with nature, design creativity and balance between practical utility and beautiful design to incorporate the same sensitivity of elements in our own work as landscapers. Creative people need regular inspiration, and La Menara was a memorable example of that, for it inaugurated a new phase in which we explored the simple beauty of minimalism.

Sensory gardens

As the famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe said: “Less is more.” Simplicity, in the hands of skilled designers, produces a magical array of textures, tones, scents and shadows that we use to great effect in the creation of private gardens, communal landscapes, public parks and also intimate courtyards and water features. These green zones act as an extension of the home’s architectural styling and lifestyle, merging interior and outdoor areas to create a series of distinct but interactive living spaces.

The Mediterranean garden, using indigenous and regional plant species, is an ideal exponent of this philosophy, again blending the practicality and environmental value of low water usage with mesmerising manicured landscapes drawn not from a riot of colour but a more minimalist beauty, with a strong emphasis on texture. As a company, therefore, our design philosophy is to create gardens that are beautiful to see, but also stimulate the senses and create a feeling of wellbeing. In other words: your own private paradise.

Transforming your surroundings

Imagine murmuring water trickling softly amid a fascination of textures, shades and tones in a setting that replenishes your energy and dances on your olfactory senses. Lighting plays an important role in this process, as today’s outdoor areas come to life not only during the day, but can also be relaxing, family and entertainment zones in the evening. We pride ourselves on being able to transform spaces in this way, creating your vision or designing one that will enthral and engage as it adds value to your home.

Sustainable design

Today there is no reason why beautiful landscape designs cannot also be sustainable and in harmony with their surroundings. Not inclined to simply repeat the same designs, we approach each project as an individual creative process that begins with the land’s setting, orientation, gradient, drainage and a host of other characteristics that not only enhance the final visual impact but also easy (low-cost) maintenance, enjoyment and environmental credentials. Put differently, we work hard to reflect the essence of the spot and transform it into a uniquely engaging and beautiful place to be.
